Grade II* Listed Town House in Wiltshire
Renovation of a Grade II* Listed Town House
Kingsbury House is a distinguished Grade II* listed Georgian townhouse, prominently situated within the conservation area of Marlborough’s historic market town. This significant building, along with its paired counterpart, features a nearly symmetrical frontage adorned with decorative brickwork, prestigious pediments, sash windows, stone dressings, string courses, and elegant porches and railings. Together, these traditional houses hold substantial historical significance and contribute to the architectural heritage at the lower end of the road.
Over the past 90 years, Kingsbury House has undergone various changes in use, most recently serving as a solicitor’s office, which unfortunately led to the loss of much of its historic fabric and the introduction of unsympathetic modern alterations. Alex Oliver Associates were engaged to undertake a sensitive restoration, aimed at repairing the building’s historic elements and reinstating its role as a residential family home.
The exterior maintenance programme included careful repointing of the brickwork with lime mortar, as well as the repair and repainting of the sash windows and doors. The stone window surrounds and string courses were also meticulously restored.
Internally, the project focused on preserving any remaining historic features, removing inappropriate modern partitions, and restoring the interior closer to its original Georgian form and layout. The result is a family home that marries modern amenities with the building's historic character, reintroducing the elegance befitting its Georgian heritage.
