Design proposals for the renovation and re-use of an historic Grade I listed Hawksmoor Church

Our design proposals for the renovation and adaptive re-use of a historic Grade I listed Hawksmoor Church aim to honour its rich heritage while breathing new life into the space. Severely damaged by wartime bombing, the church has stood in a semi-ruined state for decades, a testament to resilience and historical significance.

Rather than attempting to reconstruct the original fabric, the design focuses on stabilising the existing masonry structure while introducing a contrasting, lightweight contemporary steel framework within the historic shell. This modern intervention serves as both a functional and aesthetic armature, reinforcing the damaged masonry and creating a harmonious balance between old and new.

The steel framework provides versatile social spaces and display galleries, allowing the church to serve a dynamic community role while preserving and showcasing its storied past. This approach enables a clear reading of the building’s architectural evolution, blending preservation with purposeful modern use.
