Classic Car Museum

Alex Oliver Associates undertook feasibility studies to transform a classic car museum, addressing pressing issues of space, layout, and accessibility. Over time, the museum’s growing collection had outpaced its available storage and exhibition capacity, while the overall site suffered from a disjointed layout. Public access to the museum was routed through the domestic curtilage of the site owners, and its location lacked visibility from the main road, further limiting its reach and appeal.

A comprehensive redevelopment plan was devised to overcome these challenges. The site layout was rationalised to create a clear, dedicated entrance, separating the museum from adjacent residential areas and improving visibility from the road. Highway access was enhanced, ensuring a smoother and more welcoming approach for visitors. The building itself underwent significant redesign to elevate its architectural identity from a utilitarian, agricultural style to a modern, professional facility. These improvements not only aimed to better present the collection but also included the creation of spaces for education, entertainment, and refreshments, enhancing the visitor experience and broadening the museum’s cultural and community appeal.

Alex Oliver Associates proposed a bold transformation, taking a poorly presented site and reimagining it as a contemporary museum designed to showcase the collection to the highest standard. By focusing on the presentation of the exhibits and upgrading the overall aesthetic and functionality of the site, the proposals ensured the museum could better meet the needs of its visitors and fulfil its potential as a hub for classic car enthusiasts.

To enable the project to move forward, a detailed funding strategy was developed, including advice on securing a Heritage Lottery Grant. This strategic financial planning ensured the project was viable, providing the museum with a clear path towards realising its ambitious vision. 

The result was a thoughtfully designed plan to elevate the museum, offering a brighter future for its collection while creating an engaging and accessible space for the public to enjoy.
