Leisure Centre Renovations

Sustaining a Community Leisure Centre

The community-operated leisure centre sought to revitalise its 1970s building, with Alex Oliver Associates engaged to provide architectural solutions that would both elevate user experience and enhance the building’s sustainability. Originally at risk of closure due to high operating costs, the facility was saved by a community partnership and now required thoughtful remodelling to remain viable and welcoming.

Our proposals focused on reshaping the entrance and reception areas to create a more inviting, visible point of access, addressing the current entrance’s hidden location and unappealing design. Expanding the entrance area would provide a clear, welcoming entry point while enabling better flow and a space for informal social interaction. A redesigned café, relocated from the first floor, is integrated into the entrance, allowing it to be overseen by reception staff and making it more accessible without increasing staffing needs.

Upgrades to the building fabric were central to our design proposals, targeting energy efficiency and reduced operational costs, ensuring the leisure centre’s sustainability for the long term.
