Chippenham Golf Club
A Sustainable Club House
Alex Oliver Associates was commissioned to design a new clubhouse to embrace sustainability while addressing the shortcomings of its existing facility. Constructed in the 1960s, the original clubhouse was built to minimal standards and had deteriorated significantly, making replacement both necessary and timely.
The proposed clubhouse was designed to harmonise with the club’s sloping site, taking advantage of the topography to create a building that was as functional as it was environmentally conscious. The structure was partially embedded into the hillside, allowing direct access to the greens from the first-floor reception areas. This positioning also provided sweeping views across the course, creating a striking architectural feature and enhancing the clubhouse experience for members and visitors alike.
Sustainability was at the heart of the design. The semi-buried construction, combined with the building’s heavy structure, enabled passive thermal storage, regulating internal temperatures throughout the year. This thermal mass worked in tandem with advanced geothermal air intakes and stack-effect ventilation, reducing reliance on active heating and cooling systems. Together, these features delivered a building that minimised energy consumption while providing a comfortable and efficient environment.
The new clubhouse exemplified a modern approach to sustainable design, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings and demonstrating the golf club’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The project redefined the clubhouse not just as a practical facility but as a flagship space for innovation and sustainability within the sporting community.
